Chief Scientist and PASYKAF Collaborate on Technological Innovations in Cancer Fight

Nicosia: The Chief Scientist for Research, Innovation, and Technology, Demetris Skourides, recently met with senior representatives of PASYKAF to explore how cutting-edge technology and Artificial Intelligence can bolster the organisation’s vital work against cancer in Cyprus. Cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the country, responsible for 24% of all annual fatalities, with a troubling rise in colorectal cancer among younger adults.

According to Cyprus News Agency, representing PASYKAF at the meeting were CEO Nicolas Philippou, Chief Support Operations Officer Christos Tryfonos, and Dr. Panayiotis Andreou, the Chief Data Officer. Notably, Dr. Andreou’s role is voluntary, as part of the ongoing collaboration between UCLan Cyprus and PASYKAF. Discussions centered on the progress of a data strategy partnership, including the creation of a central data warehouse and analysis of strategic needs. A key focus was on future technological integration, particularly AI, to personalise patient care, predict needs, and streamline organisation operations.

The development of Digital Twins was also discussed, aiming to simulate disease progression and treatment outcomes-tools that could lead to more targeted, cost-effective interventions and better support for patients and their families, a press release from PASYKAF said. Skourides, it added, praised this initiative as an exemplary case of how university-driven research can generate meaningful societal impact. He emphasised that harnessing the power of data and advanced AI technologies could enable PASYKAF to scale its efforts and innovate in patient support solutions.
