Nicosia: Russia’s assertions that British sovereign bases in Cyprus were involved in Israel’s recent strikes on Iranian sites are unfounded, stated Barbara Woodward, UK Permanent Representative to the UN, during an emergency UN Security Council meeting concerning the situation in Iran. She emphasized that the UK had no involvement in these actions.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Security Council convened at a precarious juncture, as articulated by the British Ambassador. ‘We are deeply concerned by Israel’s strikes on sites in Iran, as well as the Iranian military action we’ve already seen in response. There is a clear risk that this crisis escalates, with serious implications for peace and security across the region and beyond. This is in no-one’s interests’, Woodward remarked.
Woodward stressed that the primary focus should be on preventing further escalation in the Middle East. She urged all parties to step back, exhibit restraint, and work towards reducing tensions. The UK, she reiterated, did not partake in the military actions. She also criticized Russia for spreading disinformation, labeling their claims as deeply irresponsible during such sensitive times.
The UK is committed to supporting diplomatic efforts aimed at restoring stability. Woodward highlighted that there have been high-level communications with Israel and that the British Foreign Secretary has engaged with Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi to encourage restraint and de-escalation. ‘We continue to engage partners across the region to ensure we are collectively doing our utmost to push for a peaceful outcome’, she stated.
In her address, Woodward affirmed the UK’s dedication to a diplomatic resolution concerning Iran’s nuclear activities, which she described as having no credible civilian justification. Echoing sentiments from the British Prime Minister, she emphasized longstanding concerns regarding Iran’s nuclear program, as documented by the IAEA. She acknowledged Israel’s right to security and highlighted the importance of avoiding military confrontation in favor of a negotiated solution.
Concluding her remarks, Woodward called for a robust and united response from the Security Council members. ‘We must take urgent action to de-escalate and provide an opportunity for a return to diplomacy’, she urged.
