UK Ambassador Refutes Russian Claims of British Involvement in Israeli Strikes on Iran

Nicosia: Russia’s assertions that British sovereign bases in Cyprus played a role in Israel’s strikes on Iranian sites are unfounded, stated Barbara Woodward, the UK Permanent Representative to the UN, during an emergency UN Security Council meeting on Iran. She emphasized that the UK was not a participant in these military actions.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the Security Council convened at a critical juncture. Ambassador Woodward expressed deep concern over Israel’s strikes on Iranian territory and the subsequent Iranian military responses. She highlighted the potential for the crisis to escalate, posing significant risks to regional and global peace and security, which would be detrimental to all parties involved.

Woodward underscored the necessity of preventing further escalation in the Middle East. She called on all parties to step back, exercise restraint, and work towards reducing tensions. She categorically denied any UK involvement and dismissed Russia’s claims about the British bases in Cyprus as “nonsense,” criticizing Russia for spreading disinformation at such a sensitive time.

The UK remains committed to supporting diplomatic efforts to restore stability. Woodward revealed that high-level communications have taken place with Israel, and the British Foreign Secretary has engaged with Iranian Foreign Minister Araghchi, urging both nations to exercise restraint and de-escalate tensions. The UK is also actively engaging with regional partners to promote a peaceful resolution.

Woodward reiterated the UK’s commitment, alongside the E3, to a diplomatic resolution addressing Iran’s nuclear advancements, which lack a credible civilian purpose. She reaffirmed the UK’s determination to pursue this path, stressing concerns about Iran’s nuclear program as documented by the IAEA. She acknowledged Israel’s right to security and the necessity for all parties to avoid military conflict and seek a negotiated solution.

She concluded by calling for a strong, united front from the Security Council members, urging urgent actions to de-escalate the situation and provide a diplomatic pathway forward.

During the meeting, Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia cited alleged media reports suggesting coordination between Israel and British Special Services, claiming that British bases in Cyprus sheltered Israeli aircraft following the strikes.
