Larnaka: Assistant Attorney General Savvas Angelides opened on Tuesday the Informal Meeting of the Coordinating Committee in the field of Police and Judicial Cooperation in Criminal Matters (CATS), taking place in Larnaka on 14 and 15 of April.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Angelides referred to the ongoing negotiations of EU criminal law legislative proposals during the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU, which are handled by the Law Office of the Republic. He also highlighted the importance of strengthening effective and coordinated cooperation at European level to address the evolving and increasingly complex challenges in the field of criminal law.
Angelides referred to the importance of the Directive under discussion regarding child sexual abuse and the need to immediately update the existing EU legal framework, in order to effectively address the technological methods used for this type of offence. In this context, he pointed out that the Cyprus Presidency remains committed to the goal of reaching a political agreement in June 2026.
The CATS meeting in Cyprus is attended by representatives of the Member States of the European Union with competent portfolios in criminal justice matters, of the General Secretariat of the Council of the EU, the European Commission and the Committee of the Regions and organizations active in the field of criminal justice, such as Eurojust and Europol.
It provides the opportunity for the exchange of views and the promotion of common approaches to key issues in the field of criminal justice.
The press release says that at the meeting, the participants exchanged views on issues of child protection on the internet, with an emphasis on cyberbullying, the illicit trafficking of cultural goods and the strengthening of cooperation between European organisations in the field of Justice.
