Economy still under the pandemic’s impact but improvement is expected, European Commission says for Cyprus

Economic activity started recovering from the sharp recession as of the first half of 2021, driven mainly by domestic demand, although tourism activity still remains well below the pre-pandemic level, the European Commission says in its 11th Post-Programme Surveillance Report on Cyprus.

 

According to an announcement by the Ministry of Finance, the EC’s report also notes that Cyprus’ fiscal situation continues to reflect the impact of the pandemic on the economy and sizable fiscal support measures, although a clear improvement is expected for the next years. The Commission also points out that the banking sector is weathering the COVID crisis rather well.

Sales of petroleum products rise by an annual 25% in October 2021

Sales of Petroleum products in Cyprus rose by an annual 25.2% in October amounting to 132,329 tonnes, data released by the Statistical Service of Cyprus (Cystat) show.

Total fuel sales in the period of January – October 2021, the total sales of petroleum products increased by 3.4% compared to the corresponding period of the previous year, Cystat added.

Comped with October 2020, petroleum product were mainly pushed upwards by the provisions of aviation kerosene with 141.6%, marine gasoil with 21%, as well as in the sales of kerosene with 130.8%, light fuel oil with 53.8%, heating gasoil with 39.7%, liquefied petroleum gases 15.3%, heavy fuel oil with 12.1% and asphalt with 10.1%.

A small decrease was recorded in the sales of road diesel -2.7% and motor gasoline -0.4%.

Nineteen individuals and three businesses fined for violation of COVID-19 measures

Police has fined 19 people and three establishment owners for violations of COVID-19 measures during 2,543 checks in the last 24 hours.

A Police spokesperson told CNA that in Nicosia after 1,107 checks three citizens and two establishment owners were fined while from 192 checks in Limassol, 8 people were handed out fines. In Larnaca and Morphou area, no people were reported after 435 and 154 checks respectively while in Paphos only one person was fined as well as an establishment owner following 331 checks.

Ministry of Health issues more clarifications for latest measures against COVID-19

The Ministry of Health has issued clarifications concerning the new measures announced on Wednesday by the Cabinet.

It said that from 29 November, the age limit for wearing masks is reduced to 6 years of age, in all areas where the protective mask is required and this includes elementary schools.

Excluded from this requirement are children aged 6 who are at pre-primary education.

National report on COVID-19 reflects increasing trend in epidemiological indexes in Cyprus

The National Surveillance Report for COVID-19, published on Friday by the Ministry of Health, reflects an increasing trend in the last few days among most epidemiological indexes in Cyprus. The reproduction rate R(t) is estimated at 1.20 (1.16 – 1.25).

Up to November 22nd, 2021, 129,364 COVID-19 cases have been diagnosed, of which 590 died due to COVID-19. The case fatality risk stands at 0.5%.

In the last 14 days (9 – 22 November, 2021), 4,204 cases were diagnosed. The 14-day cumulative diagnosis rate is 473.4 per 100,000 population. The median age was 34 years, 53.3% were females (2,241), 46.7% males (1,961), and for two cases information was unknown at the moment.

Cyprus Health Ministry bans entry from specific African countries due to new coronavirus variant

The Ministry of Health of Cyprus has decided as of Friday November 26 to ban the entry into the Republic of passengers from South Africa, Namibia, Lesotho, Eswatini, Zimbabwe, Mozambique, Malawi and Botswana due to the new coronavirus variant.

In a press release the Ministry said the decision was taken having taken into account the new data on the coronavirus variant SARS-CoV-2 B.1.

Cyprus reports one death, 451 new COVID cases on Friday, hospitalisations rise to 116

Cyprus reported on Friday the death of a 47 year-old man and 451 new COVID-19 cases out of 75,518 tests. The positivity rate stood at 0.6%. Total tally of the infections since the beginning of the pandemic rose to 132,402.

Meanwhile 116 patients are treated in public hospitals of whom 40 in serious condition. In a press release the Ministry of Health says that 68.11% of people treated in hospitals are not vaccinated. Also 3 post-COVID patients, who are no longer infectious, continue to be treated in ICUs intubated and in a serious condition.

The deceased, a 47 year-old man passed away at the Nicosia General Hospital’s ICU today. Total deaths since the beginning of the pandemic rose to 591, of which 378 or 64% are men and 213 or 36% women with a mean age of 76 years.

Deposits rise for fourth month in October, while loan deleveraging continues

Deposits in the Cyprus banking system rose for a fourth consecutive month in October reaching a new three-year high, while loans continue deleveraging.

According to data released by the Central Bank of Cyprus, total deposits in October 2021 recorded a net increase of €278 million (excluding changes resulting from reclassifications, exchange rate and other adjustments), compared with a net increase of €8 million in September 2021.

Constructions, services drive economic sentiment down in November

In November 2021, economic sentiment in Cyprus deteriorated as the Economic Sentiment Indicator (ESI-CypERC) decreased by 1 point compared with October 2021, the Economics Research Centre of the University of Cyprus reported on Friday.

The decrease, it said, was driven by the deterioration in construction and services confidence.

“The marginal decrease in the Services Confidence Indicator resulted from downward revisions in demand expectations, despite improved assessments of past performance (business situation and demand),” the ERC said.

France – Cyprus parliamentary friendship group delegation to visit Cyprus

A delegation of the France – Cyprus friendship group in the French National Assembly arrives on Sunday for a visit to Cyprus at the invitation of the House of Representatives.

According to a press release issued by the House of Representatives, the delegation will be composed of the group’s chairwoman Nadia Essyan and members Florence Granjus and Sophie Mette.

During its stay in Cyprus, the French delegation will be received by the Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades and the House of Representatives President Annita Demetriou.
