FM discusses Cyprus problem and Turkish illegal activities with EEAS official

Foreign Minister, Nikos Christodoulides, had a meeting, on Thursday, in Nicosia with the European External Action Service (EEAS) Managing Director for Europe, Angelina Eichhorst.

The Foreign Minister said, in a post on Twitter, that their discussions focused in particular on the latest developments in relation to the Cyprus problem and on the illegal activities of Turkey in fenced area of Varosha and in the EEZ of Cyprus.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974 when Turkish troops invaded and occupied the island`s northern third.

Next exploration round will determine the speed and way of hydrocarbon exploitation, Minister says

The next natural gas exploration round as well as the hydrocarbon quantities located will determine the speed and the exploitation of the hydrocardon reserves in Cyprus’ Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry Natasa Pilides has said.

Addressing the 9th Energy Symposium in Nicosia, Pilides also expressed the view that natural gas should remain a transitory fuel as the EU progresses to the green transition despite views expressed that this should be banned from the energy mix.

“The next exploration round, which is expected to begin with the drilling by ExxonMobil and Qatar Petroleum in block 10, is something we eagerly await with high expectations, because surely the hydrocarbon quantities in our offshore blocks will determine to a large extent the speed and the way of exploitation of the hydrocarbons in the Cypri

The P5 are trying to help the UNSG on the UN special envoy on Cyprus issue, Russian Ambrassador says

Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Cyprus, Stanislav Osadchiy, has said that the five permanent members of the UN Security Council are discussing the issue of the appointment of a UN special envoy on Cyprus, and are trying to help the UN Secretary – General solve this issue the soonest possible, because negotiations need to continue.

In statements to the media and replying to questions by journalists, on the sidelines of the inauguration of a sculpture in Ayia Napa, Osadchiy said that the system of guarantees in Cyprus is obsolete and that the Security Council needs to guarantee the settlement of the Cyprus problem.

Asked about Russia`s position on the issue of the special envoy, Osadchiy said that “we are in favour of the continuation of the mission of the special representative in Cyprus.

Cyprus and Israel sign agreement for installation of surveillance system

The Defence Ministries of Cyprus and Israel signed on Thursday an inter-state agreement for the installation of a Surveillance System.

Defence Ministry spokesperson, Christos Pieris, has told CNA that the system will be used for the electronic suveillance of the Green Line, which is the buffer zone between the Turkish occupied and the government-controlled areas of the island.

According to a Defence Ministry press release, the signing of the agreement took place in the framework of a visit which Yair Kulas, Director of the International Defence Cooperation Directorate of the Israel Ministry of Defense (SIBAT), Brig.
