Cyprus launches new more flexible tender for maritime connection with Greece

The Deputy Ministry for Shipping announced it has launched a new tender for the maritime connection between Cyprus and Greece, after the first tender failed to attract official bids.

 

According to the Ministry, the deadline for tender submissions is 12.00 on the 28th of January 2022. Further details regarding the tender and process of application can be found in the following link: https://www.eprocurement.gov.cy.

 

According to the documents, the new tender provides for more flexible structure with state subsidy increased to €5.5 million per year compared with €5 million of the first tender for 22 round trips to be carried out between April/May and September/October compared with 31 round trips throughout the year as stipulated in the initial tender.

CPP official pledges consortium’s determination to complete LNG terminal project at Vassiliko by June 2023

Deputy Managing Director of China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Duan Bingquan pledged his determination to bring natural gas to Cyprus which is scheduled to be delivered at the end of June 2023.

 

Speaking to CNA, Duan, who has been on the island on the occasion of the EMC – Eastern Mediterranean Conference & Exhibition earlier in November, said that for his company the terminal at Vasiliko is a very important project, just like it is for Cyprus.

 

Cyprus and a consortium led by China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Co Ltd signed a contract for the construction of the nearly €300 million infrastructure for the import of liquefied natural gas (LNG) at Vassiliko port for electricity generation, a project described as the biggest ever in the field of energy in Cyprus.

UN spokesperson avoids commenting on leaked Crans Montana documents, refers journalists to SG’s closing remarks

Stéphane Dujarric, Spokesperson for the United Nations Secretary-General, said he would not comment on the confidential UN documents released by Cypriot daily “O Phileleftheros” in recent days, and referred to the SG’s remarks on the meetings at Crans Montana.

 

Invited by a journalist to comment on the documents that the SG was aware before the last working dinner at Crans Montana in July 207 that Turkey was unwilling to withdraw its troops and guarantees from the island and that he failed to inform President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades, questioning the SG’s objectivity, Dujarric said he was aware of the references regarding the so-called documents that were leaked.

 

He further declined to comment on the contents or their authenticity.

Remains of Greek soldiers perished in Cyprus during Turkish invasion travel back home

The remains of seven Greek soldiers who lost their lives during the 1974 Turkish invasion of Cyprus were transferred to Greece on Thursday.

 

The handover ceremony took place on Thursday morning, in the presence of the political, military and religious leadership and Greece`s Deputy Minister of Defense Nikolaos Hardalias. House Speaker and Defense Minister were also present to pay their respects as well as the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff, the Chief of Cyprus’ National Guard and representatives of the political parties and other organized groups.

ECDC epidemiological map shows almost the entirety of the European Union in the red or dark red zone

The latest epidemiological map issued by the European Centre for for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) captures the increase of cases across the European Union and the European Economic Area, as almost its entirety now consists of red and deep red zones.

 

Cyprus remains in the red category for another week.

 

The ECDC map does not record the number of deaths or hospitalisation, or the levels of vaccination, but only the number of new cases per 100 thousand people over the past 14 days.

Transport Minister unveils schemes to promote low-cardon and electric vehicles purchase

Cyprus Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Yiannis Karousos presented on Thursday the government subsidy schemes for the purchase of low – carbon or electric vehicles, stating that the aim is for 36,000 electric vehicles to be registered by the end of 2030.

 

Speaking during a press conference, the Minister said Cyprus’ national target is for 25% of new vehicle registrations to be electric by 2030 with the ultimate goal that all cars registered by 2035 will be electric. He added that only 250 electric vehicles were soled in 2021.

President Anastasiades participates in 13th ASEM summit

President of the Republic of Cyprus Nicos Anastasiades is taking part from 25-26 in the 13th Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) summit organised by Cambodia and held online, said Government Spokesman Marios Pelekanos, in a written statement.

 

The grouping comprises 51 member countries, including countries from the European Union and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

 

Cambodia’s proposed theme reflects the Kingdom’s efforts to promote ASEM as one of the cornerstones of global governance.

Pope Francis’ visit to Cyprus sends resounding message, the Representative of Maronites tells CNA

Pope Francis’ visit sends a resounding message regarding the Maronite Cypriots but also Cyprus and the wider region, the Representative of the Maronite religious group in the House of Representatives, Yiannakis Moussas, has told the Cyprus News Agency (CNA).

 

The Pope will embark on a 5-day Apostolic Journey to Cyprus and Greece in early December. The visit will see him spend 2-4 December in Nicosia.

European Medicines Agency recommends approval of vaccination of children aged 5 to 11 with the BioNTech/Pfizer vaccine

The European Medicines Agency (EMA) has recommended that the use of Comirnaty, the COVID-19 vaccine produced by BioNTech/Pfizer, be extended to children aged between 5 and 11, the organisation said on Thursday.

 

EMA is suggesting using a lower dose of the vaccine for children between the ages of 5 and 11, than the dose used for people aged 12 and above (10 µg compared with 30 µg). The vaccine will be given as two injections, three weeks apart.

Cyprus reports 489 new COVID cases on Thursday, hospitalizations down to 110

Cyprus reported on Thursday 489 new COVID-19 cases out of 74,277 tests, while no deaths were reported. The positivity rate declined to 0.66%. Total tally of the infections since the beginning of the pandemic stood at 131,951.

 

Meanwhile 110 patients are treated in public hospitals of whom 42 in serious condition. In a press release the Ministry of Health says that 60% of people treated in hospitals are not vaccinated. Also 3 post-COVID patients, who are no longer infectious, continue to be treated in ICUs intubated and in a serious condition.

 

Total deaths since the beginning of the pandemic remained unchanged at 590, of which 377 or 64% are men and 213 or 36% women with a mean age of 76 years.

 

Of the 42 patients in a serious condition, 17 are intubated, two are being treated in ICUs off ventilator and 23 are being treated in an ACU.
