Nicosia: The UN Secretary-General's commitment to continuing efforts on the Cyprus issue has been affirmed, according to Foreign Minister Constantinos Kombos. This announcement follows a recent leaders' meeting, with discussions centered around a solution based on UN Security Council resolutions.
According to Cyprus News Agency, after a Cabinet meeting, Kombos addressed the press regarding statements by the UN Secretary-General's Personal Envoy, Maria Angela Holguin. Holguin emphasized the need for thorough preparation for an expanded Cyprus meeting, though Kombos clarified that he does not entirely agree with this perspective. He stressed that the Secretary-General is ultimately responsible for issuing invitations and must consider various factors, many of which have practical implications.
Kombos further noted the importance of the five-party expanded meeting for Cyprus and indicated that its timing depends on evolving circumstances and other contributing factors. He reassured that the Greek Cypriot side is ready and committed to returning to dialogue, expressing hope for an announcement signaling the commencement of substantive negotiations. However, he urged patience as Holguin is yet to meet with the Turkish Foreign Minister.
In response to additional inquiries, Kombos referenced Holguin's statements in an interview with Greek Cypriot daily Phileleftheros, specifically her mention of UN resolutions in the joint communiqu© following the leaders' meeting. He also acknowledged that while the Greek Cypriot side is informed about Holguin's meetings in Athens, he would not comment on behalf of her counterparts.
