Nicosia: UNSG personal envoy Mara ngela Holgun is engaging in a series of meetings with political party leaders on the island as part of her diplomatic visit.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Holgun’s agenda includes meetings with Democratic Rally leader Annita Demetriou and AKEL General Secretary Stephanos Stephanou. Holgun’s visit comes at a crucial time as efforts to resolve the ongoing division of Cyprus continue. The island has been divided since 1974 following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern third, a situation that has led to numerous UN-led peace talks, which have yet to reach a successful resolution.
Holgun’s visit underscores the ongoing commitment of the UN to facilitate dialogue between the parties. Tomorrow, she may attend The Technical Committee open day at Ledra Palace, an event scheduled from 1800 to 2100. Additionally, there is potential for further meetings with the political leaders over the coming days, although these have not been confirmed. The possibility of Holgun meeting with negotiators is also on the table, reflecting a proactive approach towards advancing peace discussions.
In the past, efforts have included informal meetings hosted by the Secretary-General in 2025, with gatherings in Geneva, New York, and a tripartite meeting at the end of the UN General Assembly High-Level Week. Holgun, tasked by the UN Secretary-General as the Personal Envoy on Cyprus, is actively working to set up a 5 plus 1 meeting on Cyprus.
During her time in Nicosia, Holgun held separate discussions with President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman. Following her meeting with President Christodoulides, Holgun expressed satisfaction with the discussions, noting her commitment to preparing for the upcoming 5 plus 1 meeting alongside the Secretary-General. Her itinerary includes visits to Athens and Ankara, followed by a return to Colombia, before continuing her diplomatic efforts in Europe with a visit to Brussels.
