Nicosia: The UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) is investigating the incident that took place on Monday in the buffer zone at Mammari village, Nicosia district, its spokesperson Aleem Siddique has told the Cyprus News Agency. "We are investigating the incident in Mammari and talking with both sides to prevent further tensions in the area. UN peacekeepers are monitoring the area closely", Siddique said.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Greek Cypriot farmers were harassed in the buffer zone by the occupation forces on Monday. In statements earlier, President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, said that the Foreign Ministry is in contact with the United Nations describing the incident as unacceptable. He spoke of pirate actions from the occupation Turkish army.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
