UN Official and President to Discuss Cyprus Issue and Turkish Buffer Zone Violations

Nicosia: Undersecretary General of the UN, Jean-Pierre Lacroix, who arrived on the island yesterday for a two-day visit, will be meeting President Nikos Christodoulides in the morning during which they are expected to discuss the Cyprus problem and the latest violations by the Turkish occupying army in the buffer zone.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis highlighted the significance of the visit, stating that it demonstrates the unwavering commitment of the UN. He mentioned that the President and the UN high-ranking official will exchange views on the latest developments in the Cyprus problem and the efforts of the UN Secretary General. The discussions will also cover the recent violations by the Turkish occupying army in the buffer zone.

Yesterday, Lacroix engaged with the diplomatic community and the youth from both communities on the island. He also paid tribute to peacekeepers who have served with UNFICYP since 1964 and launched the global UN exhibition 'Through Her Lens: Women Rising for Peace'.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, following Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern third. Despite repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks, a resolution has yet to be achieved. The latest round of negotiations in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended without a conclusive agreement.
