UK ‘pleased’ with New York trilateral meeting on Cyprus

The UK Government was pleased with the informal trilateral meeting held in New York, on October 15, between the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar in an attempt to move things towards a resumption of talks on the long-standing Cyprus issue.

Asked by the Cyprus News Agency for a comment on the outcome of the meeting and for the British view on the prospect of an expanded meeting with all Guarantor Powers, a Foreign Office spokesperson said that ‘we were pleased to see the meeting in New York between the UN Secretary General and the Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders. The UK, as a Guarantor Power and a friend to all parties, will continue to support UN efforts.’

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclus
ively. UN Secretary General hosted an informal meeting on October 15, in New York, with the President of Cyprus and the Turkish Cypriot leader.
