Tzitzikostas Emphasizes EU’s Commitment to Cyprus Settlement and Strategic Initiatives

Strasbourg: A comprehensive, fair, and lasting settlement for Cyprus remains an absolute priority of the EU and this Commission, emphasized Apostolos Tzitzikostas, European Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, during the presentation of the program of activities of the Cyprus Presidency at the EP Plenary Session.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Tzitzikostas expressed confidence in the success of the Cypriot Presidency, highlighting its motto of promoting an autonomous Union open to the world. The Commissioner reiterated the EU's commitment to a Cyprus settlement, labeling it unacceptable for any EU member state to remain under occupation by 2026. He welcomed the Cypriot Presidency's focus on security and defense, urging swift actions to implement recent EU initiatives, including the SAFE instrument and the Military Mobility Package.

Tzitzikostas also addressed the EU's support for Ukraine, noting the Commission's legislative efforts and calling for timely implementation of corresponding legal acts. On migration, he appreciated the Cyprus Presidency's prioritization of the Pact on Migration and Asylum, urging swift agreement on the Returns proposal.

The Commissioner underscored the importance of competitiveness, advocating for simplification, innovation, and decarbonization efforts. He outlined the Commission's plans for legislative simplification, which could significantly reduce administrative costs. Further, he emphasized the need for effective implementation of the Single Market Strategy, proposing a roadmap to unlock its full potential by 2028.

Tzitzikostas highlighted the importance of the Clean Industrial Deal and the revised European climate law, alongside upcoming strategies for ports and maritime industry competitiveness. He expressed alignment with the Cypriot Presidency's social priorities, mentioning the forthcoming European Pillar of Social Rights Action Plan.

Energy policies were also discussed, with Tzitzikostas explaining initiatives to integrate clean energy and reduce prices. He emphasized regional cohesion, citing upcoming strategies to support coastal and island communities, and announced the first-ever European Tourism Strategy aimed at enhancing destinations facing unbalanced tourism flows.

The Commissioner addressed the health sector's competitiveness, the Biotech Act discussions, and the Critical Medicines Act. He also detailed global partnerships, including the Pact for the Mediterranean and a forthcoming Middle East Strategy.

In trade, Tzitzikostas noted ongoing diversification efforts, referencing the recent EU-Mercosur Agreement and continuing FTA negotiations with various countries. He mentioned the RESourceEU Plan and the establishment of a Critical Raw Materials Centre to support European strategic industries.

Finally, Tzitzikostas emphasized the need for a robust Multiannual Financial Framework to support EU priorities and welcomed the Cyprus Presidency's role in advancing negotiations. He concluded by thanking President Christodoulides and the Cypriot Presidency for their efforts in hosting the College visit to Cyprus.
