Total Registrations of Motor Vehicles Surge by 12.9% in Cyprus

Nicosia: The total registrations of motor vehicles in Cyprus experienced a 12.9% increase in the first quarter of 2026, reaching 13,837 compared to 12,256 in the same period of 2025.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the Statistical Service of Cyprus released a report titled "Registration of Motor Vehicles" for January-March 2026. The report highlighted significant growth in vehicle registrations, with March 2026 alone seeing an 8.9% rise, totaling 4,817 vehicles compared to 4,422 in March 2025.

Passenger saloon cars showed a notable increase of 5.9%, with 3,710 registrations in March 2026 compared to 3,504 in March 2025. For the entire first quarter, passenger saloon car registrations rose by 10.9%, from 9,585 in January-March 2025 to 10,627 in the same period of 2026. Of these, 34.0% were new cars and 66.0% were used cars. However, rental car registrations dropped from 1,027 to 822.

The report also detailed changes in the composition of passenger vehicles. The share of petrol-powered passenger cars decreased to 36.0% in early 2026 from 43.2% in the previous year, while diesel-powered cars slightly declined to 8.8% from 9.0%. The share of electric cars remained steady at 4.9%, but hybrid cars saw a significant rise from 42.9% to 50.3%.

Registrations of motor coaches and buses surged to 64 in the first quarter of 2026 from 38 in the same period of 2025. Goods conveyance vehicles also saw a 19.5% increase, totaling 1,731, with heavy goods vehicles rising by 55.3% and rental vehicles by 43.1%. Road tractors for trailers increased by 34.1%, while light goods vehicles rose by 13.5%.

In contrast, registrations of mopeds (50cc) decreased to 29 from 60 in the previous year. Mechanized cycles over 50cc experienced a 22.4% increase, reaching 1,191 compared to 973 during the same period in 2025.
