Nicosia: The total registrations of motor vehicles in the period of January-May 2025 decreased by 4%, compared to the same period of 2024, despite an increase of 13.7% recorded in May, according to data published on Tuesday by the Statistical Service.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the total registrations of motor vehicles during this period were 21,012 in January-May 2025, down from 21,881 in January-May 2024. Passenger saloon cars saw a decrease to 16,224 from 17,176 in the same period the previous year, marking a fall of 5.5%. Out of these, 6,874 or 42.4% were new, while 9,350 or 57.6% were used cars. An exception in the trend was rental cars, which recorded a rise of 18.1% to 2,197.
The data reveals a shift in vehicle fuel types. The share of petrol-powered passenger cars decreased to 43.7% in January-May 2025 from 49.3% in the previous year. Diesel-powered cars also saw a decline to 8.8% from 10% in 2024. In contrast, the share of electric cars rose to 4.7% from 3.4% in 2024, while hybrid cars increased their share from 37.3% to 42.9%.
The registration of motor coaches and buses fell to 63 from 83 in the same period of 2024. However, goods conveyance vehicles experienced a slight increase of 0.1% to 2,474, compared to 2,471 in the previous year. Specifically, light goods vehicles increased by 3.4% to 2,021, and road tractors (units of trailers) went up by 3.3% to 95. On the other hand, heavy goods vehicles decreased by 6.9% to 271, and rental vehicles saw a significant drop of 34.6% to 87.
Registrations of mopeds under 50cc decreased to 101 from 381 in the previous year, while motorcycles over 50cc increased by 26% to 1,864, up from 1,479 in the first five months of 2024.
In May 2025 alone, the total registrations of motor vehicles numbered 4,879, marking an increase of 13.7% compared to 4,292 in May 2024. Passenger saloon cars registered a rise of 11.7% to 3,715, up from 3,325 in May 2024.
