TCCH Completes Conservation Works at Agios Thomas Mosque and School

Agios thomas: The Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage (TCCH) has announced the completion of conservation works at the mosque and adjacent school building in Agios Thomas/Aytuma. This project falls under the 'Support to cultural heritage monuments of great importance for Cyprus' initiative, funded by the European Union and executed by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

According to Cyprus News Agency, the mosque, cited in written records from the early 19th century, is situated at one of the highest points in the village. It serves as a significant example of a rural religious structure crafted from local stone. The nearby school building, constructed in a rectangular 'makrinari' style, showcases the same vernacular craftsmanship.

The conservation efforts concentrated on stabilizing these structures while maintaining their historical essence. The interventions included cleaning, structural repairs, restoration of key features, and enhancements to the surrounding area and visitor access.

The press release points out that beyond simple conservation, this project underscores the TCCH's commitment to safeguarding Cyprus's shared cultural heritage as a collective legacy for all communities. "By restoring sites of cultural and historical significance across the island, the Committee contributes to building trust, encouraging dialogue, and fostering a greater sense of shared ownership of the island's rich and diverse heritage," it states.

Since its inception, the TCCH has directed the conservation of over 200 cultural heritage sites throughout Cyprus, encompassing religious monuments, secular buildings, and archaeological sites. "Through its bicommunal approach, the Committee continues to demonstrate how practical cooperation can deliver tangible results, strengthening confidence and promoting mutual understanding between communities," it concludes.
