London: The President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, who arrived in London last night, will meet today at 7:30 p.m. Cyprus time at Downing Street with the British Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer with European and bilateral issues on the agenda.
According to Cyprus News Agency, ‘this is a particularly important meeting’, as ‘it is the British Prime Minister’s first meeting with a European leader following last Monday’s historic Summit,’ during which the EU and the United Kingdom laid the foundations for a new partnership. A relationship that had been shaken after Brexit.
In addition to European issues, which take on special significance ahead of Cyprus assuming the Presidency of the EU Council in the first half of 2026, the two leaders are also expected to discuss bilateral matters. They will also address regional and international issues.
The President of Cyprus will brief the British Prime Minister on the latest developments regarding the Cyprus problem, focusing particularly on the recent appointment of the EU Special Envoy for Cyprus, Johannes Hahn, as well as his upcoming meeting with the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General, Mara ngela Holgun Cu©llar.
It is worth noting that this is the third meeting between the President of the Republic of Cyprus and the British Prime Minister since Mr. Starmer took office in July 2024. According to government sources, this fact highlights the excellent level of bilateral relations between Cyprus and the United Kingdom.
Today’s meeting follows Mr. Starmer’s historic visit to Cyprus in December 2024, the first by a British Prime Minister in 53 years.
Immediately afterward, Mr Christodoulides will head to the City of London to participate as the keynote speaker at the ‘Minds in Cyprus’ event. This is a strategic initiative by the Cypriot government that is part of its broader plan to transition the country to a new productive model, emphasizing the utilization of the scientific and professional capital of the Cypriot diaspora.
As government spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis pointed out, it is ‘a coherent and targeted set of measures that creates the framework so that every Cypriot excelling abroad can return and continue their career and life in their homeland.’
On Thursday, President Christodoulides will travel to Helsinki at the invitation of the President of the Republic of Finland, Alexander Stubb, for a two-day working visit, during which he will hold meetings with the country’s top political leadership.
