Nicosia: Presidents Nikos Christodoulides of Cyprus and Maia Sandu of Moldova emphasized the importance of EU enlargement for Europe's strategic future during discussions held in Nicosia. This marked the first visit by a Moldovan head of state to Cyprus in over twenty years.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides highlighted that the visit occurred at a pivotal moment, just 19 days before Cyprus is set to assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union. He noted that the presidency would focus on delivering a presidency that is both effective and results-oriented, aimed at strengthening a more autonomous, resilient, and prosperous EU.
President Christodoulides underscored the significance of EU enlargement as a geopolitical tool, stating that it is a crucial component of their vision. He reflected on Cyprus' accession experience, noting its significant and multidimensional impact on Cypriot society. He expressed hope that Moldova would soon experience similar benefits, citing Moldova's upcoming inclusion in the EU's free-roaming zone from January 1, 2026, as a tangible example of progress.
The Cypriot President commended the Moldovan government for its commitment to reforms despite external pressures and hybrid threats. He reaffirmed Cyprus' support for Moldova's EU perspective and pledged to actively work during the Cypriot presidency to advance enlargement, aiming for positive developments that bring Moldova closer to their shared goal.
President Christodoulides also emphasized deepening bilateral ties, highlighting the political will on both sides to enhance cooperation in areas such as justice, education, police collaboration, transport, and energy. He thanked Moldova for its consistent support on the Cyprus issue and assured that the Cypriot presidency would stand by Moldova with specific actions.
President Sandu expressed pleasure in visiting Cyprus as it prepares to take over the EU Council presidency. She noted that both countries share the aspiration for a continent that is whole, free, secure, and prosperous. She described the visit as occurring at an important moment for Europe and their bilateral relations, hoping it would inject new momentum into their cooperation.
Sandu emphasized Moldova's critical stage on the road to EU membership, expressing strong expectations that Cyprus will promote a credible and ambitious enlargement agenda during its presidency. She highlighted that EU accession is not only a strategic objective for Moldova but also a survival strategy amid threats to their sovereignty.
Sandu stressed that enlargement strengthens the EU, arguing that a stronger, more stable Moldova anchored in the European family benefits the Union. She pointed to Moldova's solidarity with Ukraine and its contributions to European security through peacekeeping missions and civil-protection efforts.
She noted that Moldova faces a window of opportunity with state institutions aligned on a pro-European reform agenda. Advancing accession at this moment, she argued, strengthens the EU's eastern frontier, supports Ukraine, and prevents malign actors from exploiting Moldova's upcoming electoral cycle.
Expressing gratitude for the constructive dialogue and Cyprus' support for a presidency roadmap, Sandu conveyed confidence that cooperation will deepen as Cyprus takes over the EU Council presidency. She concluded by stating that together, they can advance the vision of a stronger, safer, and more united Europe, with Moldova ready to contribute and move forward.
