President Travels to Brussels for EU Summit, Emphasising EU’s Role in the Region

Brussels: President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides departs on Wednesday for Brussels to take part in the European Council Summit. The agenda includes Ukraine, the Middle East, European defence, and migration, with Cyprus emphasising the EU’s role in the broader region.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis, in remarks after the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, said President Christodoulides will leave in the evening for Brussels to attend the EU Summit scheduled for June 26 and possibly June 27. He is expected to have a private working dinner with Luxembourg’s Prime Minister, Luc Frieden.

On Thursday morning, the President will take part in the European People’s Party (EPP) meeting. Immediately after, he will join a high-level meeting on migration organised by Italy’s Prime Minister, alongside leaders from member states.

Following that, Letymbiotis said, the EU Summit will begin. The agenda includes key issues such as the situation in Ukraine and the Middle East, European defence, strengthening EU competitiveness, and geopolitical economics. ‘Given the regional developments and global challenges, the European Council Summit takes on special importance. Cyprus is actively involved, highlighting the EU’s crucial role in its immediate neighbourhood,’ he stated.

The President will be accompanied by Deputy Minister for European Affairs Marilena Raouna, the Director of the President’s Press Office, Victoras Papadopoulos, Letymbiotis, and other officials.
