Nicosia: The Republic of Cyprus is approaching the electrical interconnection project, known as the Great Sea Interconnector among Israel, Cyprus, and Greece, as a project of geostrategic importance, President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, stated. He made these remarks on Tuesday while responding to journalists' questions after visiting the Filoxenia Conference Center in Nicosia.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the President was asked about the recent meeting between US President Donald Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, particularly whether the electrical interconnection and Cyprus' potential involvement in the IMEC corridor were discussed. President Christodoulides revealed that Cyprus had initially been briefed on the meeting's outcomes and would receive comprehensive information upon Prime Minister Netanyahu's return to Israel.
Responding to comments by Democratic Party President Nikolas Papadopoulos regarding the electrical interconnection, President Christodoulides affirmed that the Cyprus government maintains a clear stance on the matter. He emphasized that Cyprus views this project as one of geostrategic importance and is actively coordinating with the Greek Prime Minister on this issue. The President mentioned having discussed the project with the Greek Prime Minister earlier that day, highlighting an agreement between them regarding the obligations and the necessity to update relevant studies due to significant international interest.
When questioned about the completion of the Israel-Cyprus segment of the project and the European Commission's stance, President Christodoulides clarified that there had been no negative feedback from the European Commission. He underscored the need for a revised study encompassing the entire project.
Regarding the timeline for the study, President Christodoulides indicated that they are in the final stages and expected to announce the assignment for updating the study within the next 24 hours.
