President Emphasizes Importance of Utilizing Cyprus’ Scientific Talent

Limassol: Research and scientific knowledge are the most important tools we have to successfully address the issues facing our societies today, President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides said on Monday evening noting that using the country's scientific capital is a strategic priority and that the goal is to employ Cypriots in well-paid jobs currently filled by foreign staff.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides announced his upcoming travels to London, Birmingham, the USA, and the United Arab Emirates to encourage Cypriot scientists to return to their homeland. Speaking at the graduation ceremony of doctoral students at the Cyprus University of Technology (CUT), he expressed joy in participating in what he described as a "special celebration" for CUT, the academic community, and the future of the nation.

The President praised CUT's contributions to research and innovation, confirming the state's commitment to continue investing in these areas. He emphasized the necessity of translating economic development into investments in Education, Health, and the welfare state, assuring continued support for CUT and broader educational initiatives.

Highlighting Cyprus' human resources as its comparative advantage, President Christodoulides declared the nation's readiness to further invest in research and innovation through collaborations and synergies. He emphasized the role of graduates as carriers of specialized knowledge capable of transforming it into practical solutions and societal benefits.

The President noted Cyprus' success in employing 83% of university graduates in their respective fields and acknowledged the presence of foreign workers in well-paid positions. However, he expressed the aim to see more Cypriots employed in these roles, recalling the government's initiative to repatriate Cypriot scientists that began in London in May 2025 with significant results.

President Christodoulides assured that the Government is implementing policies to foster an environment conducive to young researchers' development, providing opportunities for professional growth and active participation in shaping Cyprus' future.
