President Christodoulides Mourns Loss of Former President Vassiliou

Cyprus: Cyprus lost a citizen of the world who expanded Cyprus' international footprint, President Nikos Christodoulides said on Wednesday on the passing of former President George Vassiliou. Vassiliou, who was elected President in 1988, passed away late on Tuesday at the age of 94.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides expressed his sadness upon hearing the news, highlighting Vassiliou's association with efforts towards Cyprus' economic development, social progress, and the modernization of the state. He emphasized Vassiliou's decisive role in achieving Cyprus' accession to the European Union and noted his lifelong dedication to seeking a solution and reunification.

President Christodoulides reflected on Vassiliou's term in office, noting the promotion of policies that enhanced the Cyprus economy's international outreach and established the country as a center for professional and administrative services. He also mentioned the foundation of the University of Cyprus as a significant milestone of Vassiliou's tenure.

Concluding his statement, President Christodoulides conveyed his farewell to Vassiliou on behalf of the state and its people, expressing appreciation, respect, and gratitude. He extended sincere condolences to Vassiliou's wife, children, and grandchildren.
