Nicosia: The pursuit and goal of an autonomous, independent Union, open to the world, is directly linked to the education system, President Nikos Christodoulides stated at an event celebrating Europe Day. He also announced 93 scholarships awarded by universities in Cyprus.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the event was organised at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia and featured addresses from the Minister of Education, Sport and Youth, Athena Michaelidou, and the Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna. President Christodoulides shared that six universities in Cyprus responded to the call of the Secretariat of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, offering a total of 93 scholarships-comprising four full and 89 partial-for the academic year 2026-2027.
The President emphasized that the scholarships are intended for Cypriot and European citizens, based on criteria set by each university. He described them as practical proof of European identity and significant support for the new generation in accessing knowledge. He also reflected on the symbolic and deeper significance of Europe Day, which celebrates unity, cooperation, and solidarity within the European project.
President Christodoulides highlighted the historic juncture for Cyprus, which, from 1 January 2026, holds the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the second time. He noted the importance of Cyprus's role in European developments, coordinating policies, and contributing to decision-making affecting millions of citizens. He acknowledged the Cyprus Presidency's occurrence amidst major geopolitical upheavals, technological transformations, and challenges for European security, competitiveness, and democratic stability.
Underlining the message of the Presidency, he stated it is clear and timely: to envision a European Union that strengthens its cohesion, resilience, and competitiveness through investments in knowledge, innovation, science, and sustainable development. He expressed a strong belief in internal strengthening and further integration as critical to enhancing the EU's global position.
The President stressed the importance of an education system that fosters critical thinking, innovation, collaboration, and respect for diversity among young people, which aligns with the vision of a Europe open to the world.
Minister of Education, Sport and Youth, Athena Michaelidou, stated that the Cyprus Presidency prioritizes developing an inclusive, high-quality, and future-oriented European education area. She emphasized actions that strengthen cooperation, inclusion, and a student-centered approach within schools. She also discussed promoting an inclusive Erasmus+ Program to ensure equal opportunities for learners across Europe.
The Minister recognized the pivotal role of teachers and committed to supporting their empowerment in a rapidly changing environment. She also highlighted efforts to enhance Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training as pillars of sustainable development and social cohesion.
Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, noted the significance of Europe Day in celebrating the European Union and its achievements. She pointed out that Cyprus holds the Council of the EU Presidency as a reliable and beneficial Member State, working towards an "Autonomous Union, Open to the World." She emphasized the importance of this vision in providing greater autonomy for the EU across areas such as education, employment, innovation, and research.
Raouna concluded by highlighting the connection between Europe Day and youth, associating Europe with innovation, creativity, and progress.
