President and US Ambassador Praise Bilateral Ties and Cyprus’ Strategic Role

Nicosia: Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides and US Ambassador Julie Davis praised the strong bilateral ties and strategic partnership between Cyprus and the United States, highlighting the island’s significant role in the region.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the President and the Ambassador made these remarks during an event celebrating US Independence Day, held at the old campus of the University of Cyprus in Nicosia. President Christodoulides emphasized that the partnership is grounded in trust, shared values, and a common purpose, marking it as a strategic alliance. He expressed gratitude to Ambassador Davis for her efforts in enhancing Cyprus-US relations across key areas of cooperation.

The President acknowledged Cyprus’ role as a stable entity in regional crises, serving as a safe harbor and a bridge to safety, facilitating the departures of American and other citizens. He reiterated Cyprus’ commitment to working with the United States to promote stability, peace, and prosperity in the Eastern Mediterranean and Europe, emphasizing the importance of dialogue and diplomacy.

President Christodoulides highlighted new milestones achieved in bilateral relations over the past year, noting that political, defense, security, economic, and commercial cooperation are central to a thriving relationship. He mentioned the State Partnership Program with the New Jersey National Guard as a crucial element in crisis management and disaster response, enhancing security and resilience.

On the Visa Waiver Program, the President stated its significance for citizens, economies, and shared security, affirming ongoing efforts to achieve its implementation. Addressing the Cyprus issue, he stressed the importance of a reunited Cyprus as an independent, stable strategic partner and enabler of regional security.

Ambassador Davis acknowledged Cyprus’ role in the Eastern Mediterranean and expressed gratitude for the assistance provided in evacuating American citizens from conflict zones. She highlighted the State Partnership Program’s value with the New Jersey National Guard, emphasizing increased citizen safety and resilience.

The Ambassador pointed out that economic and commercial cooperation is a testament to the strengthened relationship between the two nations, yielding tangible benefits for both economies. On the Cyprus issue, she reiterated the US desire for reunification in line with UN Security Council resolutions, underscoring diplomacy as the key to advancing peace.

Ambassador Davis also praised the reappointment of UNSG Personal Envoy Maria Angela Holguin and the appointment of Johannes Hahn as the EU Envoy for Cyprus, expressing optimism about progress toward the aspirations of the Cypriot people.

The event concluded with guests enjoying music by the US Naval Forces Europe and Africa Band. Cyprus remains divided since 1974, following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of its northern third, with past UN-led peace talks failing to yield results. An informal meeting on Cyprus is scheduled for July, as announced by the UN Secretary-General.
