Nicosia: We need political will to resume the talks from where they left off at Crans Montana in 2017, President Nikos Christodoulides said Thursday, in statements before his meeting in Nicosia with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman in the presence of UNSG's personal envoy Maria Angela Holguin.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the President emphasized the importance of political will in reigniting discussions on the Cyprus issue. He mentioned that he would present specific ideas and suggestions during the meeting, which he described as particularly important. The President recalled statements made by the Turkish Cypriot leader regarding United Nations Security Council (UNSC) resolutions, asserting that the foundation for discussion is established, and what is now required is the political determination to continue negotiations from the point they were left at Crans Montana.
He also mentioned that the meeting would cover Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) and expressed optimism for positive developments. When questioned about addressing the issue of missing persons amid the ongoing stalemate, the President acknowledged the deadlock and noted that he was approaching the meeting with specific ideas and suggestions aimed at achieving tangible progress on this humanitarian concern.
