Over 160,000 Cypriot Citizens Above 18 Unregistered for Upcoming Elections

Nicosia: A total of 160,094 Cypriot citizens over the age of 18 have not registered on the electoral roll, as revealed by figures from the Civil Registry System. According to Cyprus News Agency, Elikkos Elia, the Permanent Secretary of the Interior Ministry, highlighted this issue during a briefing with political party representatives, in preparation for the parliamentary elections scheduled for May 24, 2026.

Elia noted that the percentage of unregistered voters in the 18-25 age group stands at 52.06%. He underscored the urgency of the situation as the House of Representatives is expected to dissolve on April 23, followed by the decree issuance for elections on the subsequent day. The deadline for registration on the electoral roll is April 2, 2026, and candidacies must be submitted by May 6, 2026.

Elia explained that all citizens aged 18 and over, who have resided in Cyprus for the past six months, are eligible to vote. Those turning 18 by the election date can also register, provided they apply between January 3 and April 2, 2026. Turkish Cypriot holders of a Republic of Cyprus ID residing in free areas are also included. For individuals up to 25 years old, electronic application submissions are available.

Elia discussed legislative changes, such as automatic registration on the permanent electoral roll and reducing the voting age to 17, which will take effect from July 1, 2027, in time for the 2028 presidential elections. He also mentioned the adoption of driving licenses as a means of identification.

The figures presented by Elia showed a significant registration gap among those born from 1995 onwards, particularly ages 18 to 31, with 39.32% unregistered. Campaigns to notify new voters will be conducted in collaboration with the Press and Information Office.

Elia shared that the official election results are expected on the evening of May 24, with the declaration ceremony for elected parliamentarians the following day. He also introduced a sample of the parliamentary election ballot to political party representatives, noting that due to 25 registered political parties, printing on both sides of the ballot might be necessary if there is interest beyond the existing 15 electoral combinations.

Elia confirmed that the exact number of candidates will be known on May 6, 2026, when nominations are submitted. He also addressed financial obligations during the meeting with political parties, aiming to improve the current situation promptly.
