No Report on Obstructing Survey of Vessel in Cyprus EEZ, CNA Learns

Nicosia: The research/survey vessel FUGRO GRAUSS is currently conducting surveys in Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) for the laying of a fiber optic cable and despite Turkey’s allegations of interference with the ship to change course, there has so far been no report from the company involved that the surveys are being obstructed, CNA has learned.

According to Cyprus News Agency, government sources indicated that this project involves several countries, including Greece, Saudi Arabia, the United Kingdom, and Germany, and passes through the Cypriot EEZ. Following the company’s request, a notice to mariners (navtex) was issued by the Republic of Cyprus authorities, valid until August 16, for geophysical survey operations. Turkey, however, issued an Antinavtex, repeating its known allegations about the Eastern Mediterranean claims.

Government sources confirmed to CNA that no complaints have been filed by the company regarding the obstruction of surveys, despite Turkey’s allegations. The Republic of Cyprus authorities maintain constant communication with the vessel.

Reports from the Turkish daily ‘Milliet’ are said to reiterate Turkey’s claims in the Eastern Mediterranean, which government sources describe as contradictory to international law and detrimental to the political climate. Cyprus has stated that any obstruction or threat to the research vessel will prompt appropriate actions, including complaints to the UN and demarches at the EU level.

The Joint Rescue Coordination Center of the Republic of Cyprus issued a Navtex on August 5 for the geophysical survey operation by S/V “FUGRO GAUSS” from August 6 to 16, advising all vessels to maintain a clear distance.
