Nicosia Hosts Meeting of High Level Group on Gender Mainstreaming

Nicosia: Nicosia is hosting a pivotal meeting of the High Level Group on Gender Mainstreaming on Monday and Tuesday, as part of the Cyprus EU Presidency framework. The gathering brings together high-ranking officials from all 27 EU member states alongside representatives from the European Commission, the Council of the EU, and the European Institute for Gender Equality, as noted in a press release by the Cyprus EU Council Presidency Secretariat.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the meeting included a detailed presentation on the priorities and actions of the Trio Presidency of Poland, Denmark, and Cyprus, with Ireland set to follow in the next six months. Participants focused on the progress achieved at the European level regarding the transposition of three key Directives. These Directives aim to strengthen the principle of equal pay for equal work between men and women, enhance gender balance in management positions in listed companies, and introduce measures to combat violence against women and domestic violence.

The agenda also addressed global efforts to promote gender equality and women's rights. During the event, the Cyprus Presidency's programme on gender equality was thoroughly outlined, and findings from a European survey were presented. This survey, developed in collaboration with the European Institute for Gender Equality, examined the issue of online violence against girls in the EU, specifically targeting those aged 13-18. It was conducted in 10 EU member states, including Cyprus.

The survey provides a comprehensive overview of online gender-based violence against girls, highlighting its forms, consequences, and the experiences of adolescents. It also reviews existing legal frameworks across EU member states and proposes specific measures for prevention, education, and enhancing the accountability of digital platforms. In a speech delivered on behalf of the Minister of Justice and Public Order by the Commissioner for Gender Equality, Josie Christodoulou, the dedication of member states to this cause was emphasized, underscoring a shared commitment to building a fairer, more inclusive, and resilient Europe.
