Nicosia Hosts Informal EU AGRIFISH Meeting on Agriculture and Fisheries

Nicosia: Informal meetings of EU Agriculture and Fisheries Ministers are taking place in Cyprus on Monday and Tuesday, within the framework of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU. A press release issued by the Secretariat of the Cyprus Presidency said that on Monday the Ministers of Agriculture will meet at the Filoxenia Conference Centre. Under the chairmanship of the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment of the Republic of Cyprus, Maria Panayiotou, the European ministers will discuss about strengthening the resilience and strategic autonomy of the EU agri-food sector and possible solutions to address the increasing risks faced by the agricultural sector. According to Cyprus News Agency, the meeting will also be attended by the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, Christophe Hansen, the Chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Agriculture and Rural Development, Veronika Vrecionová, as well as representatives of key sector bodies, including COPA, COGECA and C EJA. The programme will continue with a guided tour at A. G. Leventis Gallery for Ministers and Head of Delegations, followed by a Wine Master Class: 'Cyprus Wine Experience: Indigenous Grapes and Timeless Commandaria'. The day will conclude with a formal dinner featuring traditional cuisine and folklore performances, offering participants a distinctive cultural experience of Cyprus's rural heritage and hospitality. On Tuesday, the informal Council of Fisheries Ministers will be held at the Conference Hall, under Maria Panayiotou's chairmanship. The European Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis, will also participate, as well as the Vice-Chair of the European Parliament's Committee on Fisheries (PECH), Paulo do Nascimento Cabral. There will be a discussion on the future of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) and the European Commission's evaluation of it, which will be presented by Costas Kadis, the press release added. EU Ministers will have the opportunity to jointly assess the progress of th e policy over the last decade and consider how it can continue to respond effectively to the changing circumstances of the fisheries sector. The meeting will conclude with the Ministers' family photo and a press conference featuring the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment of the Republic of Cyprus, Maria Panayiotou and the Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis.
