Newly Formed Technical Committee Aims to Bridge Gap Between Greek and Turkish Cypriot Youth

Nicosia: The aim is to bring the youth of Cyprus closer, the Greek Cypriot co-chair of the newly established Technical Committee on Youth, Amalia Avraam, told CNA. The committee, composed of 32 members split equally between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, seeks to foster interpersonal relations by organizing activities with various themes for the youth of both communities.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Avraam mentioned that the first meeting, held on May 5, was an introductory session. It focused on the committee’s operation and the planning of future meetings, rather than delving into specific actions. The atmosphere was described as positive, with both sides eager to collaborate.

The committee plans its subsequent meeting on May 21. Given the number of members and the different issues relevant to youth, there may be subcommittees formed to address various priorities. The frequency of future meetings will be determined by the actions set to be launched.

The committee’s establishment follows an early April meeting between the Republic of Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides, and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar. This initiative was one of several agreed upon during the informal Cyprus problem meeting held in Geneva in March under UN auspices.

Cyprus remains divided since 1974 after Turkey’s invasion and occupation of the northern third. Efforts for reunification have consistently stalled, with the latest negotiations in July 2017 at Crans-Montana ending without resolution. UN Secretary General Ant³nio Guterres announced another informal meeting scheduled for the end of July, intending to push forward initiatives like the Technical Committee on Youth and other collaborative efforts across the island.

In early May, Guterres appointed Mara Angela Holgun Cu©llar as his Personal Envoy on Cyprus, tasked with reengaging the parties and advising on future steps for the Cyprus issue. Holgun had previously served as Personal Envoy from January to July 2024.
