Nicosia: The Government Spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, referred on Wednesday to the willingness of Cyprus and Moldova to further strengthen their bilateral cooperation, announcing an official visit by the President of Moldova to Cyprus. Speaking to journalists at the Presidential Palace after the Cabinet meeting, the Spokesperson said that on Friday, December 12, the President of Moldova, Maia Sandu, will pay an official visit to Cyprus, at the invitation of the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides.
According to Cyprus News Agency, this visit marks the first time in 22 years that a Moldovan President will visit Cyprus, highlighting the intent of both nations to enhance their bilateral relations. Over the past 2.5 years, the Presidents of both countries have engaged in multiple meetings at international conferences, setting the stage for this significant diplomatic engagement.
Nicosia is set to welcome President Sandu with the objective of strengthening cooperation in key areas such as justice, education, and transportation. Pending agreements in these sectors are expected to be completed, fostering new momentum and tangible benefits for citizens. Additionally, Cyprus will reiterate its support for Moldova’s European aspirations, acknowledging the progress Moldova has made in reforms and its adherence to the fundamental principles of the European Union.
The upcoming Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026 will prioritize the political dimension of enlargement, with a focus on meritocracy and alignment with the EU’s acquis communautaire. This aligns with Cyprus’s view that the advancement of candidate countries like Moldova is crucial for the security and strength of the EU.
Furthermore, Cyprus appreciates Moldova’s stance on the Cyprus issue and its recent alignment with the EU’s measures against Turkey, reflecting a shared commitment to international law and territorial integrity. Cyprus reciprocates this support by backing Moldova’s sovereignty and stability.
The visit signifies a shared vision for a peaceful and secure future amid regional and international challenges. Through solidarity and mutual respect, Cyprus and Moldova aim to build alliances of geopolitical value for the European family, a goal that will be central during the Cyprus Presidency, as emphasized by Letymbiotis.
