Mitsotakis Highlights Need for Substantial Revision of EU Treaties’ Article 42.7

Nicosia: Greek Prime Minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, highlighted the need for a substantial upgrade and implementation of Article 42.7 of the European Treaties, in remarks upon his arrival at the informal meeting of EU Heads of State and Government, on Friday, in Nicosia.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the Greek Prime Minister emphasized the significance of the extraordinary European Council taking place in Cyprus at this time. Mitsotakis remarked on the discussions about enhancing the European Strategy of Autonomy and European defence solidarity, noting that Greece, along with other European nations, supported Cyprus during the conflict involving the U.S., Israel, and Iran. He described this as the first concrete proof of Europe's capability to support EU member states under threat.

Mitsotakis has been advocating for a substantial upgrade and activation of Article 42.7 of the European Treaties, the mutual assistance clause obliging member states to assist any state under attack. He expressed satisfaction that this issue has been firmly placed on the European Council's agenda and mentioned that Greece intends to use its European Presidency in the second half of 2027 to elevate this discussion further.

The leaders are also set to discuss the new Multiannual Financial Framework and assess the economic impact of the ongoing Gulf conflict. Mitsotakis highlighted the Greek government's efforts to support Greek society within the bounds of fiscal capacity, showcasing the Greek economy's stability through surpluses, debt reduction, and high growth rates.

Acknowledging the challenges faced by Greek citizens due to the prolonged austerity crisis and economic uncertainty, Mitsotakis affirmed the government's commitment to support them as fiscal capabilities allow, without making untenable promises or disrupting fiscal balance, which underpins all other policies.
