Nicosia: The Ministry of Defence signed a Memorandum of Cooperation with the Cyprus Retired Army Officers Association to enhance civil emergency planning. Defence Minister Vasilis Palmas emphasized that the agreement fortifies the civil emergency framework and increases the Republic of Cyprus's security amidst growing global challenges.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Defence Minister Palmas highlighted the global 'intense instability' and the evolving security landscape where traditional threats coexist with asymmetric and hybrid challenges. He cited factors like regional conflicts, revisionist policies, and technological advancements as issues affecting international peace and stability. In response, he underscored the importance of security and defence in the strategic planning of modern states. Palmas noted that for Cyprus, which has been semi-occupied for over five decades, reinforcing deterrence and resilience is critical to preserving sovereignty and territorial integrity.
Palmas further elaborated on the Ministry's support for integrating retired officers into the civil mobilisation mechanism, acknowledging their knowledge and experience as crucial for enhancing Civil Emergency Planning.
Major General (retd) Alexandros Charalambous, President of the Cyprus Retired Army Officers Association, described the memorandum as 'historic' and a milestone for officially recognizing the role of retired officers in society and national defense. He emphasized the voluntary response of over 30 association members, who participated without financial incentive, reflecting their dedication to their homeland. Charalambous stressed that retired officers remain committed to contributing their experience and knowledge to the state's independence and sovereignty.
