Macron to Meet Christodoulides and Mitsotakis in Cyprus Amid Regional Security Concerns

Paphos: French President Emmanuel Macron will visit Cyprus on Monday, where he will meet with President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, according to the Elysee.

According to Cyprus News Agency, President Macron's visit to Paphos is a demonstration of France's solidarity with Cyprus, particularly in light of recent drone and missile attacks that have impacted the EU member state. The visit underscores the strategic importance of France's agreement with Cyprus, especially amidst the regional turmoil.

The purpose of Macron's visit is to bolster security efforts in Cyprus and the broader eastern Mediterranean region, aiming to de-escalate the existing crisis. The French President will emphasize the importance of ensuring freedom of navigation in the area, particularly through the EU's "Aspides" naval operation. The visit will also provide an opportunity to coordinate efforts for the safety and potential repatriation of European citizens in dangerous areas.

In the early hours of March 2, military facilities in the British Bases at Akrotiri in southern Cyprus were struck by a Shahed-type drone, resulting in minor damage. This incident occurred amid heightened tensions following US-Israeli attacks on Iran. The Iranian-made drone, suspected to be linked to Hezbollah in Lebanon, has led to increased security measures. In response, several countries, including Greece and France, announced the deployment of warships, aircraft, and air defense assets to protect Cyprus, with the UK also sending a warship. Despite the regional conflict, Nicosia maintains its stance of non-involvement in the Middle East conflict.
