Brussels: The Minister of Labour and Social Security, Marinos Mousiouttas, departed on Sunday for Brussels to chair the European Union (EU) Employment and Social Policy Council (EPSCO) on Monday.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the Ministry of Labour and Social Security and the Secretariat of the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the EU 2026 confirmed in a joint press release that the Council will address several significant issues, including the European Semester 2026. Within this framework, it is anticipated that a new Recommendation on Human Capital in the EU will be adopted. The Recommendation is an initiative by the European Commission as part of the autumn package of the European Semester, aiming to identify skill mismatches and shortages in the Union's human resources, alongside suggestions for better coordination of training, retraining, and education policies.
Additionally, the Council is set to receive updates from the Cyprus Presidency on reaching a preliminary agreement regarding the revision of the Regulation on the European Globalisation Adjustment Fund. The revision aims to ensure timely assistance to workers facing redundancy, enabling them not only to re-enter the labour market swiftly but also to retain their current jobs with varied responsibilities.
Furthermore, EU Employment Ministers will engage in discussions and exchange views on the theme 'From Innovation to Quality Jobs: Using AI to strengthen quality employment and workers' rights'. This session will take place in the presence of the European Commission Executive Vice-President responsible for Social Rights, Skills, Quality Jobs and Preparedness, Roxana M®nzatu, and will include participation from Nobel Prize-winning economist, Professor Christoforos Pissarides.
