Pristina: On Sunday, the people of Kosovo participated in early parliamentary elections, exercising their democratic right to vote. The elections followed a political stalemate after the February 2025 elections, and there is anticipation for the prompt formation of a new Assembly and Government to continue engagement with authorities and focus on essential EU-related reforms. The elections saw active participation from all communities and political parties, indicating a strong adherence to democratic principles.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the European Union has deployed an Expert Electoral Mission to monitor the post-electoral procedures in Kosovo. The EU is urging the newly formed Parliament to ratify agreements related to the Growth Plan for the Western Balkans, which is a strategic instrument in place from 2024 to 2027. The ratification is crucial for Kosovo to fully benefit from the opportunities the Growth Plan presents for its population.
Furthermore, the EU emphasizes the importance of normalizing relations between Kosovo and Serbia, facilitated by the EU, as a pathway to progress in their European integration. The EU expects all obligations from the Agreement on the Path to Normalisation and previous Dialogue agreements to be fulfilled without delays or preconditions. A High-level meeting is in the works, contingent on favorable conditions.
In addition, the EU is making strides to lift measures on Kosovo, having already released £216 million in financial assistance following the orderly transition of local governance after recent local elections. Another £205 million is anticipated to be released early next year to further support Kosovo's development.
