Paphos: Journalists and the media are integral to the democratic foundation, emphasized President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, during an event in Paphos organized by Kosmos Radio and the newspaper ‘Adesmeftos’. The event marked over 20 years of these outlets’ contributions to the Paphos community.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides acknowledged the challenges faced by media professionals, including rights violations. He introduced a new initiative to address these issues, emphasizing the importance of journalists’ access to information, transparency, and accountability.
The President highlighted the government’s annual planning institutionalization as a step towards transparency. He also announced an upcoming plan to support local media through the Press and Information Office and the Ministry of Interior, underscoring the government’s recognition of local media’s vital role.
President Christodoulides expressed satisfaction in celebrating the anniversaries of Kosmos Radio
and ‘Adesmeftos’, commending their significant contributions to Paphos and beyond. He also noted the decline of print media amidst digital media’s rise, warning of the risks of misinformation and the commercialization of news.
The President welcomed criticism as long as it serves the public interest and reiterated that the press, while holding other powers accountable, is not beyond scrutiny.
Archbishop of Cyprus, Georgios, and other speakers at the event, including the President of the Cyprus Journalists’ Union and Paphos Mayor, echoed the importance of responsible journalism, particularly in times of misinformation and fake news. They emphasized freedom of the press as fundamental to democracy and highlighted the unique support local media enjoy in Paphos.
