Nicosia: Investing in Higher Education and research is not just a political choice, but a national necessity, said the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, during his speech at the inauguration of the new 'Dr. Artemis Hadjipanagis' Medical and Biological Sciences Teaching Building, on the University Campus.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the President, who earlier toured the new building and participated in the inauguration ceremony with the Minister of Education and the Deputy Minister of Culture, emphasized the significance of the day as a milestone for the University of Cyprus and the wider Cypriot society. He highlighted the inauguration of a modern space that embodies the country's vision for investing in education, research, and human resources.
The President underscored that the construction of the Teaching and Biological Sciences Building is part of the University's continuous development. Since its inception, the University of Cyprus has established itself as a key pillar of academic excellence in the region. The government views the University as a strategic partner in the effort to transform Cyprus into a regional center for quality education, research, and innovation. This includes significant loan agreements with the European Investment Bank and the Council of Europe Development Bank to support the University's development.
President Christodoulides reiterated that investing in Higher Education is crucial in a rapidly changing world where knowledge, innovation, and adaptability are vital for a state's competitiveness. Universities play a decisive role as the soft power of states to meet international challenges. He assured ongoing state support for the University of Cyprus and other universities, believing that investment in education is an investment in the country's progress and competitiveness.
The Rector of the University of Cyprus, Professor Tasos Christofides, noted that since September 2025, the newly inaugurated building has hosted courses from all faculties and departments, accommodating approximately 2,000 students daily. He acknowledged the significant donations from Dr. Artemis Hadjipanagis, which, together with state funding and loans, facilitated the building's construction. Christofides highlighted the state's vital support and expressed commitment to ensuring that this investment yields substantial benefits for the University's development.
In his address, the President of the Council of the University of Cyprus, Tasos S. Anastasiou, emphasized the importance of the new building for enhancing the University's infrastructure and educational capabilities. He expressed gratitude to the state for its decisive support, affirming that this public investment underscores education as a top priority.
Gregoris Artemis Hadjipanagis, son of the donor, spoke of the hall's legacy, shaped by hard work and respect for learning. He expressed hope that students would pursue excellence and humility, and that the hall would serve as a lasting beacon of knowledge and purpose for future generations.
