Nicosia: The Interior Ministry of Cyprus is currently scrutinizing a "very large number" of objections related to election candidates, in collaboration with the Law Office, according to Chief Returning Officer Elikkos Elia. Elia made this announcement following the submission of candidacies by representatives of religious groups for the upcoming parliamentary elections.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Elia addressed questions regarding the broader electoral process, noting that the most challenging elections in recent years were conducted in June 2024. These elections were particularly complex due to the numerous simultaneous electoral procedures and ballots. Elia emphasized that despite these challenges, the elections were executed as intended. He also mentioned that this year's electoral process is anticipated to be more manageable, though he acknowledged that elections inherently involve complexity.
Elia also highlighted the ongoing review of objections submitted in recent days, which focus on verifying whether candidates satisfy the legal requirements to participate in the parliamentary elections. "The issue under examination is whether a candidate is entitled and qualified to run," Elia stated, underscoring the importance of ensuring that all candidates meet the necessary legal criteria.
