Nicosia: Inflation in January 2026 increased at a rate of 0.5%, according to the Statistical Service. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for January 2026 saw a decrease of 0.30 points, reaching 99.98 units compared to 100.28 units in December 2025.
According to Cyprus News Agency, the largest positive change among the economic categories compared with January 2025 was recorded in Agricultural Products at 8.2%. Conversely, significant negative changes were observed in the categories of Electricity and Water at -6.5% and Petroleum Products at -6.1%.
When comparing with December 2025, the biggest change was also noted in Agricultural Products, which rose by 7.9%. Analysis of percentage changes showed notable increases in the categories of Restaurants and Accommodation Services (4.8%), Educational Services (3.7%), and Recreation, Sports and Culture (3.2%) when compared with January 2025, while Clothing and Footwear saw a decrease of 7%.
Further analysis indicated that, compared with December 2025, Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages experienced the largest increase at 3.5%, whereas Clothing and Footwear had the most considerable decline at 12.1%.
In terms of contributions to the CPI change, the Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages category made a positive contribution of 0.53, followed by Restaurants and Accommodation Services at 0.52, and Recreation, Sports and Culture at 0.22. On the negative side, Clothing and Footwear contributed -0.44, and Transport contributed -0.36.
For the CPI change from December 2025 to January 2026, Clothing and Footwear had the most significant impact with -0.80, while Food and Non-Alcoholic Beverages contributed positively with 0.62. Catering Services made a positive contribution of 0.49 to the CPI change when compared with January 2025, whereas Petroleum Products had a negative contribution of -0.45.
Fresh Vegetables contributed positively by 0.50 to the CPI change from December 2025 to January 2026, while Clothing Items had a notable negative contribution of -0.58.
