Indian Prime Minister Modi’s Strategic Visit to Cyprus Amidst Regional Tensions

Nicosia: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Cyprus on his way to Canada to participate in the G-7 summit, according to Indian press.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Indian newspaper “The Hindu” reports that the visit to Cyprus is seen as a message to Trkiye, which had assisted Pakistan during Operation Sindoor. Indian officials stated that Modi is expected to meet with the President of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides. The visit aligns with India’s traditional foreign policy goals, with official sources in New Delhi highlighting its significance both politically and commercially.

Sources in New Delhi hinted that Modi’s visit to Cyprus serves as a diplomatic message to Trkiye. This comes after Trkiye’s support to Pakistan during Operation Sindoor in May. Additionally, the visit is seen as a timely revival of top-level contacts, especially as Cyprus is set to assume the Presidency of the Council of the European Union in the first half of 2026. Cyprus had condemned the terror attack in Pahalgam on A
pril 22 and indicated plans to raise the issue of cross-border terrorism from Pakistan at EU-level discussions.

Historically, Cyprus has been a consistent supporter of India on issues such as Kashmir and cross-border terrorism from Pakistan. It has also supported India’s campaign for a permanent seat at the U.N. Security Council, the Nuclear Suppliers Group, and the International Atomic Energy Agency. Conversely, India has advocated for resolving the Cyprus issue in line with UNSC resolutions, international law, and the EU acquis.

Officials in New Delhi have noted the growing importance of both Cyprus and Croatia following the launch of the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) during the G-20 summit in New Delhi in 2023. Cyprus and Croatia are being considered as potential participants and investors in IMEC-related projects.
