House President and Italy’s Ambassador Discuss Strengthening Cooperation and Cyprus Issue

Nicosia: The prospects for further strengthening cooperation between Cyprus and Italy, as well as addressing the Cyprus issue, were discussed during a meeting between House of Representatives President Annita Demetriou and Antonella Cavallari, the accredited Ambassador of Italy to Cyprus.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Cavallari emphasized that the ongoing occupation of the territory of an EU member state is inconceivable and highlighted that the Cyprus problem is a European issue. She expressed Italy's readiness to support efforts towards a peaceful and just solution. The meeting underscored the very good relations between Cyprus and Italy, based on their common characteristics as Euro-Mediterranean states, and the desire to further strengthen these ties, particularly at the parliamentary level.

The press release noted the important role of parliamentary diplomacy, especially during times of political instability and uncertainty. The House President pointed out the challenging situation for a country under occupation and emphasized Cyprus's contribution to efforts aimed at establishing security and stability in the Middle East. She highlighted the importance of a more active EU presence in the region and expressed appreciation for Italy's principled stance and steadfast support regarding the Cyprus problem.

Demetriou referred to the current developments in anticipation of the next informal meeting under the auspices of the UN Secretary-General. She stressed the commitment to resuming substantive talks to achieve a just and viable solution in accordance with UN Resolutions and European principles.

Discussing the upcoming parliamentary elections in Cyprus, Demetriou addressed challenges faced by modern democracies, including the rise of extreme ideologies and populism. She emphasized the importance of knowledge and responsibility in decision-making as key elements for representatives of citizens.

Cavallari reiterated that the ongoing occupation is inconceivable and stressed Italy's readiness to support a peaceful solution. She highlighted Cyprus's role as a pillar of security and stability in the region, noting Italy's contribution to the 'Amalthea' initiative and the willingness to enhance cooperation with Cyprus.

Both sides acknowledged the need to respect the ceasefire and implement the Middle East Peace Plan. Prospects for further strengthening cooperation between the two countries were noted, with a focus on promoting exchanges between their parliaments.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, following Turkey's invasion and occupation of its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have failed to yield results due to Turkish intransigence. The latest negotiations, in July 2017 at Crans-Montana, ended inconclusively.
