Nicosia: Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides, has expressed his intention to meet again with UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy on Cyprus, Maria Angela Holguin Cuellar, following their recent discussion in Nicosia. He emphasized the critical role of Holguin’s interactions, particularly those in Turkey, in shaping the future course of the Cyprus problem.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides highlighted the importance of Holguin’s scheduled meetings in various countries, including Turkey, as essential to determining the way forward. Holguin, currently in Cyprus, plans to engage with leaders from both sides and other stakeholders, and is set to visit Athens, Ankara, and London for further discussions.
During a conversation with journalists at the inauguration of a Business Support Center, President Christodoulides discussed the potential for future meetings involving himself, the Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar, and Holguin. He mentioned that a new meeting with Holguin is definite, with specific dates under consideration. Christodoulides suggested that a tripartite meeting could facilitate open dialogue and progress towards positive developments expected in July.
Addressing the sensitive issue of Greek Cypriot property usurpation in Turkish-occupied areas, Christodoulides affirmed that the law applies universally. He expressed disappointment over media reports suggesting that some Greek Cypriots believe the government should not enforce legislation, as it could strain relations between the communities. He reiterated the independence of the judicial system from executive influence.
Cyprus remains divided since Turkey’s invasion in 1974, with numerous UN-mediated peace efforts failing due to persistent disagreements. The latest negotiations at Crans-Montana in July 2017 concluded without resolution. UN Secretary-General Ant³nio Guterres plans to convene an informal meeting on Cyprus in July, following a previous session in Geneva. The parties have agreed on several initiatives, including opening crossing points and establishing a Technical Committee on Youth.
Guterres appointed Mara Angela Holgun Cu©llar as his Personal Envoy on Cyprus in early May, with her role being to engage all parties and advise on the next steps for the Cyprus issue. Holguin is expected to complete her assignment by July 2024.
