Greek PM Identifies New Opportunity for Cyprus Dialogue in Ankara

Ankara: Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed optimism on Wednesday about the potential to restart meaningful dialogue on the Cyprus issue, during his meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan at the 6th Greece-Turkey High Level Cooperation Council meeting in Ankara. Mitsotakis emphasized the importance of adhering to Security Council resolutions in any renewed discussions.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the Greek Prime Minister outlined that the dialogue on Cyprus had stalled since 2017. However, he highlighted that initiatives by the United Nations Secretary-General have opened a new window to resume talks. Mitsotakis reaffirmed Greece's clear stance on Cyprus, advocating for a process strictly aligned with Security Council resolutions.

Cyprus remains divided since 1974 following Turkey's invasion and subsequent occupation of the northern part of the island. Despite numerous UN-led peace negotiations, a resolution has yet to be achieved. The most recent discussions, held in July 2017 in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, ended without agreement.
