Nicosia: The government’s policy on the labour market, employment, and youth is paying off, said Government Spokesperson, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, in statements to the media at the Presidential Palace on Tuesday.
According to Cyprus News Agency, Letymbiotis highlighted a sharp decline in youth unemployment and their increased participation in employment, which are ‘tangible results of the targeted policies implemented by the government.’ He cited official data from the Statistical Service, noting that youth unemployment in the 15-24 age group fell by 37% in the first quarter of 2025, dropping to 9.9% from 15.7% in the corresponding period of 2024. In absolute terms, the number of unemployed young people decreased by 2,025, from 5,221 to 3,196.
Letymbiotis also pointed out that the employment rate for young people aged 15-24 in 2024 reached 35.4%, marking the highest performance since 2008. Furthermore, he found the reduction in the number of young people aged 15-29 who are not in employment, education, or training to be particularly encouraging.
Specifically, the number of young people not in employment, education, or training fell by 24.4% over the course of one year, from 21,628 to 16,354, which amounts to a decrease of 5,274 individuals. The corresponding rate for 2024 was recorded at 12.9%, the lowest since 2010.
‘These figures confirm that the government’s policy on the labour market, employment, and youth is delivering measurable results,’ Letymbiotis noted.
