Government Announces Full Operational Readiness for Fire Season, Spokesman Reveals

Nicosia: The government is in full operational readiness, with reinforced forces, modern means, and a clear strategy for civil protection, said Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis during a press briefing at the Presidential Palace. He emphasized that this year’s fire season finds the country more prepared and strengthened than ever.

According to Cyprus News Agency, the Spokesperson highlighted that the state currently has the largest number of forest firefighters in its history, the most powerful fleet of ground-based forest firefighting vehicles, and the largest aircraft fleet ever. This preparation was achieved much earlier than in previous years.

As of June 1, nine primary aircraft are already operational on the island, with two more expected to arrive in the coming days, bringing the total fleet to 11 aircraft, five helicopters, and six aircraft, Letymbiotis stated.

For the first time, aircraft arrivals began in March, ensuring increased operational readiness before the peak of fire risk. These assets, either leased or provided through interstate agreements, are accompanied by trained crews. Additionally, five more aircraft from the National Guard, the Police, and the British Bases could be activated in a supporting role.

Regarding the strategic transition to a state-owned fleet, Letymbiotis mentioned that the procurement process for 10 firefighting aircraft and four medium-sized helicopters has started. Plans for acquiring aircraft include, in the long term, one heavy-duty aircraft and one long-range coordination aircraft.

He reiterated that by April 2025, the entire operational responsibility for the aircraft will be transferred to the National Guard to enhance flight safety and efficient fleet management.

The Spokesperson also noted that the Cyprus Forestry College is reopening after nearly a decade and will accept students in September. Preventive measures have been initiated, including controlled grazing in Pyrgos in the Tylliria area and providing forest communities with woodchippers.
