Forestry Director Raises Alarm Over Suspicious Fire Patterns in Paphos

Nicosia: Forestry Department Director Savvas Iezekiel has raised concerns over the recurring fires in specific areas of the Paphos district, describing the pattern as suspicious and warranting serious investigation. According to Cyprus News Agency, Iezekiel voiced his apprehensions following two fire incidents in Lysos on Saturday, suggesting that the fires were intentionally set. He highlighted a history of fires in the region, particularly between Droushia and Prodromi, as well as in Skoulli, and emphasized that the repeated incidents indicate that 'something is going on' in the wider area.

Iezekiel detailed how two separate fires erupted in Lysos, just 500 meters apart, and connected these events to a series of fires recorded in recent years in the described 'triangle' area. He questioned the annual recurrence of such fires and stressed the need to identify the underlying cause. He noted that while a single fire might be considered an isolated incident, the consistent pattern suggests otherwise. The Forestry Department remains vigilant, and Iezekiel plans to propose measures for addressing the issue at upcoming meetings.

Current investigations into the Lysos fires are ongoing, and Iezekiel refrained from providing further details at this stage. Despite efforts to raise public awareness, he expressed concern over individuals ignoring safety regulations and using tools that could ignite fires. The Forestry Department remains on high alert due to dry weather conditions, with temperatures nearing 40 degrees Celsius posing a significant fire risk.

Iezekiel extended gratitude towards those aiding in fire prevention and control, highlighting the collective responsibility to protect forests and communities. He acknowledged a couple whose information led to the arrest of two fire suspects in Kornos and praised visitors to forest areas for their vigilance. Recent rainfall in regions such as Troodos and Kakopetria has reduced fire risks, but Iezekiel cautioned that 'dry lightning' could still pose a threat. He urged the public to maintain caution and vigilance to prevent potential fire outbreaks.
