Brussels: Strengthening efforts to achieve the EU's strategic autonomy is the number one priority of the EU Cyprus Presidency, which begins on January 1st, President Nikos Christodoulides said. In statements to the press following the European Council's meeting in Brussels, the President announced that the European Commission's Head, Ursula von der Leyen, will visit Cyprus on January 7th for the Presidency's opening ceremony, and subsequently, she will visit other countries in the region.
According to Cyprus News Agency, President Christodoulides emphasized that Cyprus assumes the EU Presidency at a critical and challenging time, acknowledging the differing views and approaches on various issues, and the Presidency's need to find solutions and move forward collectively. He outlined the priority issues for the Presidency, which include the Multiannual Financial Framework, competitiveness, Ukraine, defense and security, enlargement, and migration.
The strengthening of efforts to achieve the strategic autonomy of the European Union is the foremost priority, President Christodoulides noted, adding that a robust European Union also signifies a strong Republic of Cyprus. He highlighted the necessity to enhance EU relations with the countries of the broader Middle East.
Furthermore, President Christodoulides remarked that the EU shares common challenges and strategic interests with the US. He stressed the need for the EU to institutionalize its cooperation with the US and demonstrate a comprehensive 360-degree perspective. Cyprus, as a Member State, is positioned to lead this effort on behalf of the European Union, considering its geographical location and excellent bilateral relations with all states in the region.
President Christodoulides also mentioned that housing and energy issues are pivotal to the Presidency's agenda, along with the protection of children from social media, as well as health and education concerns.
