EU’s Potential Role Crucial in Cyprus Settlement, Says Johannes Hahn

Nicosia: The European Union has the capacity to significantly aid in resolving the Cyprus issue, stated Johannes Hahn, the European Commission’s Special Envoy for the Cyprus problem, during a meeting with House President Annita Demetriou in Nicosia. Hahn emphasized the EU’s commitment to achieving a comprehensive solution and described his appointment as a demonstration of the European Union’s determination to support a final resolution to the long-standing issue.

According to Cyprus News Agency, Hahn outlined his role as one that supports and facilitates the UN-led process while gathering perspectives on the ground to develop a complete understanding of the situation. He characterized the current efforts as the beginning of a journey, expressing optimism that it would eventually result in a positive outcome.

Demetriou highlighted Hahn’s visit as a significant indication of EU involvement. She noted his deep understanding of the Cyprus issue and expressed optimism that his presence could revitalize efforts towards achieving a just and viable solution in accordance with UN guidelines. She also emphasized the importance of timing, given the increasing instability in the region, and suggested that Cyprus could serve as a catalyst for peace-building in Europe and the Middle East.

The division of Cyprus dates back to 1974, following Turkey’s invasion and occupation of the island’s northern third. Multiple UN-led peace negotiations have failed to produce a resolution, largely due to Turkish resistance. The most recent negotiations in July 2017 ended without success in Crans-Montana, Switzerland. An informal meeting on Cyprus, announced by the UN Secretary-General, is scheduled for the end of July, following a similar gathering in Geneva in March.
