Eurostat: Cyprus Ranks Second in EU for Immigrant Ratio in 2024

Cyprus: Cyprus ranks second across the entire European Union in terms of the ratio of immigrants relative to its population in 2024, according to the latest data from Eurostat. Specifically, in 2024, 42 immigrants per 1,000 residents were recorded in Cyprus, placing it immediately after Malta with 60 per 1,000 residents, and ahead of Luxembourg with 38 per 1,000 residents.

According to Cyprus News Agency, at EU level, 4.2 million third-country nationals immigrated to EU Member States in 2024. This figure does not include asylum seekers or people from Ukraine who are under temporary protection in certain countries. At the same time, 1.5 million people moved within the Union, that is, from one member state to another. Overall, in the EU there were 9.2 immigrants from non-EU countries per 1,000 residents in 2024.

Significant disparities are observed among Member States. At the bottom of the ranking, the lowest immigration rate was recorded in Slovakia, with just 1 immigrant per 1,000 residents. This is followed by France with 6, while Italy, Latvia, Bulgaria and Poland recorded 8 immigrants per 1,000 residents.

In almost all EU member States, the number of immigrants from non-EU countries was higher than the number of immigrants coming from other member States. The only exceptions were Luxembourg - where 85.5% of immigrants came from other EU countries - and Romania with a share of 56.0%. By contrast, the highest proportions of immigrants from third countries were recorded in Czechia (87.0%), in Italy (86.2%) and in Spain (84.5%).
